frequently asked questions

  1. Can you paint woodchip wallpaper with clay paint?
Basically, this works fine, but the structure of the woodchip will remain visible, as a thin layer of paint will not completely cover it. With clay plaster, however, you can cover the woodchip structure and thus make it invisible. In any case, the wallpaper should be a single layer and firmly attached to the wall.

  2.  I live in a rented apartment and have to hand the walls back white when I move out - is that possible?
This should be fine - before repainting the walls, the clay paint should be smoothed with a damp sponge and then given a silicate primer. Then it can then be repainted with a regular emulsion paint.

  3. I have already painted my walls with nen-do clay paint, can I paint it in a different shade?
This is possible - in order to avoid "mixing" the two colors, it is advisable to seal the base color beforehand with a silicate primer.

  4. Can you use clay paint in the bathroom or in the kitchen?
Basically yes - but we do not recommend bringing it into direct contact with splash water, as clay paint is not smudge-proof and will dissolve again with water contact.

  5.  Is clay paint suitable for a child's room?

Our clay paint is extremely suitable for a child’s room as it does not contain any chemicals and is eco-certified. Damaged areas can be repaired every now and then without it being particularly noticeable.

  6. Can I paint on wood with clay paint?

Wood can be painted with clay paint, ideally by priming beforehand. It should be remembered, that the paint is not smudge-proof, so it is only recommended to a limited extent for everyday furniture.

  7. I removed the wallpaper and the wall underneath is very stained and uneven - can I paint it directly with clay paint?

This works without any problem, but it may be, that the given structure becomes more obvious with the end result. It can look very nice and lively - but it is not for everyone, so it is best to do a sample beforehand and then decide.

  8. If there are stains or damage to the clay paint - can surfaces be touched up or do they have to be completely repainted?

Actually, small areas can be touched up quite well at a later date. The paint on the wall slightly dissolves when the new clay paint is applied and is therefore, not recognizable as an unsightly repair afterwards. It is best to do a test beforehand in an inconspicuous area.

  9. What is the difference between clay plaster and clay paint?

Clay paint is applied with a brush and is much thinner than the clay plaster. The look is determined by the brushstroke. Clay plaster is usually applied with a trowel, the base material is slightly coarser than the paint and the application is 2-3mm thick, which significantly and measurably contributes to improving the indoor climate.

  10. How do I calculate the actual need for paint?
It is advisable to order approx. 20-30% more material for the calculated number of square meters of the surfaces. Depending on the type of application (thin or thick), the actual amount may vary.
